These functions are for manipulating the installers.xml database, which is designed as an informational database of installer types, silent install options, and other information needed to automate the installation of as many things as possible.

You should generally use the Installer Functions as a front-end, which will in turn use these functions to manipulate the database. Therefore, you shouldn't need to know much about these functions unless you're creating your own content in the XML.
